How Green Zones Work
How Green Zones Work
The Marine National Park Green Zone is a 'no-take' area and extractive activities, like fishing or collecting, are not allowed without a permit.
Anyone can enter a Green Zone and participate in activities such as as boating, swimming, snorkelling and sailing.
Travelling through a Green Zone with fish on board is also allowed - it is only an offence to fish in a Green Zone.
Fishing gear, such as rods with attached hooks, must be stowed inboard the boat or in rod holders. All fishing apparatus must be out of the water.
Anchoring is also allowed in a Green Zone, however in high use and sensitive areas, use of a mooring may be necessary or there may be a no anchoring area defined by bouys.
Read more on how Green Zones are protecting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park here.

Public Moorings
Public Moorings
Public moorings are available in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and are available to all Reef users and are installed at popular locations.
Blue double cone-shaped buoys attached to the moorings have a colour-coded band explaining the class (vessel length), time limits, and maximum wind strength limits applicable to the mooring.
Find the correct moorings for your vessel here.
Moorings are a great alternative to anchoring and are encouraged, to help protect the reef from any accidental damage that anchors may cause. Specific no-anchoring areas have been designated to help protect coral reefs. The majority of no-anchoring areas are marked by white pyramid-shaped buoys with a blue label.

Better Boating Guide
Better Boating Guide
We have our very own Better Boating Guide - Our Guide to Greener Recreational Boating.
This guide is available to anyone who spends time on the water and has plenty of tips and tricks for ensuring you minimise the impact of your boating activities on the marine environment.
Our location in the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef region is the major draw card for thousands of boating visitors every year and we have a responsibility to share knowledge with the boating community about how they can enjoy boating more sustainably. The ocean provides boundless opportunities for adventure and recreational activities, yet sadly many of those activities have the potential to affect the state of the marine environment. The boating community are in the unique position to act as ambassadors of the ocean, by making smart, sustainable choices and creating good boating habits.
Tips and tricks for basic boat maintenance, managing waste water, saving energy onboard, pollution control and using non-toxic cleaners are all included in the guide. More regional-focused tips on being Reef Smart, anchoring with care, zoning requirements in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, as well as the best ways to report wildlife and marine incident sightings are also included.

Whale Heritage Site
Whale Heritage Site
The World Cetacean Alliance has formally designated the Whitsundays as a Whale Heritage Site following an active community program by Whales of the Whitsundays (WoW) which recognises the importance of our region for humpback whales to calve.
The Whitsundays is only the second such site to be designated in Australia and the first to be designated inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the only site in the world to be in a UNESCO World Heritage Area - it is the first Whale Heritage Site in a World Heritage Area!
Coral Sea Marina are proud Platinum sponsors of the Whales of the Whitsundays program.
Whale Heritage Sites are incredibly vital to encouraging human-cetacean coexistence and the program promotes responsible whale watching giving people the opportunity to enjoy these majestic creatures in their natural environment knowing the negative impacts on animals are being minimized and mitigated.

International Seakeepers Society
International Seakeepers Society
Coral Sea Marina is a Marina Partner, proudly the first in the South Pacific, of the International Seakeeper's Society.
The International Seakeeper's Society supports marine science and education by utilizing privately owned yachts and vessels to act as platforms for oceanographic research, educational outreach, and marine conservation. They are dedicated to facilitating research, conservation efforts, and education by connecting the yachting and boating community with the scientific and academic communities.
Coral Sea Marina is uniquely positioned on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef and able to promote awareness and facilitate participation in ocean conservation programs and the citizen science movement to both privately owned vessels and our commercial tourism operators.
There are numerous ways in which vessel owners can participate - Whether by documenting encounters with local marine life, or capturing important scientific data whilst cruising the water of Australia and the South Pacific, partnering with the International SeaKeepers Society provides everyday people to actively contribute to the crucial work of ocean conservation.

Be Pest Free!
Be Pest Free!
Marine plants and animals can be transported across thousands of kilometres of ocean on the hulls of vessels and in the ballast water of ships. Most of these organisms will not survive the journey, and those that do survive will not cope with the conditions of their new environment by reporting any sightings of suspicious exotic pest specials to the department.
Only a few of the marine species that have been introduced are considered pests. They threaten native biodiversity, commercial fisheries and aquaculture industries, and greatly increase maintenance requirements for vessels.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, has put together a comprehensive guide to the potential marine pest risks for Australian waters, which we recommend you read. All boat owners can contribute to ensuring we keep our waters free from pests.
