“Safety at Sea” seminars to boost confidence for water-lovers this sailing season
With so many boaters taking the helm and charting a course to a tropical paradise this winter, safety at sea is more important than ever. The hardworking team at Voluntary Marine Rescue (VMR) Whitsundays know all about the importance of safety at sea, as the number of activations they are carrying out has almost doubled in the last three years.
As Platinum Sponsor VMR Whitsundays, Coral Sea Marina felt the timing was perfect to connect the knowledge of the VMR crew with the Coral Sea Academy to bring a “How to Prevent an Emergency at Sea” session to the Academy’s Better Boating Series. The Better Boating Series offers a series of free information workshops and interactive training sessions to ensure adventurers are feeling safe at sea, prepared and confident whilst exploring the Whitsunday region.
“As Platinum sponsors of VMR Whitsundays we are incredibly supportive of the hard work the team of volunteers do. Just as the number of boaters in the Whitsundays has increased exponentially over the last 18 months, so too has the number of activations VMR have attended. From vessel breakdowns to medical emergencies the team of volunteers are on call 24 hours a day to assist the on-water community of the Whitsundays.” explains Joscelyn O’Keefe, Sales, Marketing and Services Manager at Coral Sea Marina.
O’Keefe continues, “By educating the boaties on the importance of being prepared, having the right equipment and selecting the right weather conditions before they head out on the water, the goal is to reduce the number of incidents at sea. It is so important to us as a business that we educate visitors on how they can boat safely whilst they enjoy their holiday here and at the same time preserve and enjoy the incredible marine environment that is on our doorstep,”
Regardless of boating experience, locals and visitors are invited to attend The Better Boating Series hosted by Coral Sea Academy. Ther are a handful of upcoming events that have a specific focus on Safety at Sea – on Tuesday 3rd August at The Lookout Lounge (Coral Sea Marina), VMR Whitsundays will provide some advice on “How to Prevent an Emergency at Sea”. At the end of the month, this is supported by “What to Do in an Emergency at Sea”.
“Volunteer Marine Rescue Whitsunday often see plenty of incidents that could easily have been avoided with better planning and preparation”, Mal Priday, President of Volunteer Marine Rescue Whitsundays explains.
“The Better Boating series, and specifically these two “Safety at Sea” themed events, are a great opportunity for boaters to receive an educational experience in an informal environment so they will be better equipped with knowledge that could potentially help them have a safer and more enjoyable experience whilst out and about on the beautiful Whitsunday waters. It may allow them more peace of mind and let them enjoy their Whitsundays experience to the fullest.”
VMR Whitsundays are always looking for volunteers to assist every aspect of running their organization. From fundraising coordinators to radio operators, from rescue crew to land-based support, there are roles suitable for all levels of marine experience. These events are the perfect opportunity to get to know a little more about the incredible work VMR’s across the country do.
The Better Boating Series are open-door events where all are welcome. Those interested in attending are encouraged to register their interest via whitsundaytickets.com.au.
